responsible learning with ai – beyond banning or letting go
Generative AI opens up new possibilities for learning, feedback, and personalization in education. At the same time, it raises important questions about dependency, assessment, and educational quality. In this workshop at TechFest 2026, Menno Thijssen and Merel Clasquin move beyond the usual debate of banning or fully allowing AI and focus on responsible learning with AI.
what is it about
You will explore the latest insights on AI in higher education and how students, especially Generation Z, are already using it. Through two short demos, you will experience how AI can support learning and where its limits become clear. The session also looks at design choices for education and assessment, and how to encourage learning with AI without handing over the learning process itself.
This is an interactive workshop where participants actively reflect, analyze the impact of AI on learning, compare perspectives, and translate insights to their own educational practice.

This session is relevant for anyone interested in AI and education, and especially valuable for teachers, curriculum designers, policy makers, and education professionals in MBO, HBO, and WO working with learning, assessment, and the role of AI in education.
after this workshop, you will:
-
Gain clearer insight into how AI is used by students today
-
Experience AI as a learning support tool and understand its limits
-
Reflect on smart design choices for education and assessment
-
Make more conscious decisions about using AI responsibly
-
Use AI as support rather than a replacement for learning
If you are navigating the role of AI in education and looking for balance instead of extremes, this workshop offers a grounded place to start.
